MAMO

In the form of Maimo, this surname was listed amongst the Aragonese garrison which occupied Malta in 1283, however, it is then curiously absent from all registers until 1569.

The two main potential origins for surname are from an Italian name based on the Greek mamos or mammos, meaning “obstetrician”, or a Siculo-Arabic shortening of the personal name Muhammad.

The three stars (mullet of six points) in this coat of arms represent the holy trinity and, therefore, the Christian faith. It is rather common in Maltese heraldry.
